I attended several talks from photographers from around the country talking about the latest trends in photography.  Why attend these conferences?  The biggest reason is education. Photography, like any other profession moves forward. The basics stay the same, mind you, but techniques, and styles are constantly evolving.  I want to keep abreast of those changes so that we can offer you, our clients the latest and greatest in what the photography world has to offer.

The trade show, is thousands of square feet and hundreds of companies showing off the latest in cameras, lenses, printers, albums, backdrops, lighting, you name it!. It’s one of my favorite parts of the conference as it allows me to let my imagination run wild with ideas for new products to offer you all. Products that will help you display and enjoy the photographs of your family that we create, in new and creative ways.  One example are new die cut cards that can be used for Christmas cards, birthday party invitations, thank-you note, save the date cards… Your imagination is the limit! You’re no longer constrained by rectangles and squares! Hooray!  Stay tuned as we introduce new products throughout the year!

We met Chris in Berlin, and spent a couple hours taking photos around our flat and in a local bierstube. He’s a singer and aspiring model and we were thrilled to spend the afternoon being creative with him. The results were fantastic!

It’s not very often that one has the privilege of having a person in one’s life who is both a friend, a mentor, a role model and an inspiration. I have been blessed with such a person…Monte Zucker. Monte is a legend in the photographic world. Not many people can be called legends…Monte can.

Monte passed away last night after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

I met Monte for the first time two years ago when I attended one of his week long workshops in West Palm Beach, Florida. From the first moment I met him, I knew he was special. He made the room light up! His passion for teaching us about capturing the essence of a person through photography was unending. His zest for life and loving others was contagious. He taught us to cherish each and every second that we have with each other, and to love others as best we can. Jeff and I attended another one of his workshops in Yucatan, Mexico last year. It was Jeff’s first time meeting Monte. Jeff too saw that passion in Monte.

I’m sitting here typing this with tears streaming down my cheeks as I remember that funny old man who could run circles around any of us, his beautiful smile and infectious laugh. His loss to us in the photographic community is immense and will be felt for decades. I will consider myself blessed if I can become 1/10th the photographer and person he was. We will miss you Monte. You taught us not only to see the light, but you left a bit of your light in each of our hearts.

Thanks Monte for the way you touched our lives…save us a spot on your team when we are called when it’s our time.

During this time, it might be impossible for families to know what they might need in order to heal in the future. For families overcome by grief and pain, the idea of photographing their baby may not immediately occur to them. John and I are famous! Sort of. We’re pictured in the November issue of Shutterbug Magazine, accompanying an article written by our good friend Monte Zucker. His article was about the trip we took to Yucatan, Mexico, earlier in the year. When Monte was in Chicago doing a lecture last month, he excitedly pressed the magazine into my hands, saying “you’re famous!” It’s quite something to see a picture of yourself in a national magazine.

After a moment’s reflection, I thanked Monte for the honor and asked him, next time, if he could please crop everyone else out of the picture and put our studio name somewhere in bold in the article. He tousled my hair and said “easy, young man, you’re not THAT famous.” Good ol’ Monte.

After six full days of seminars I’ve officially reached saturation point! There’s so much fantastic information being presented it’s too bad this is only a once-yearly event. Because my brain is full. WPPI offers so many seminars, banquets, photography classes, computer training and business classes that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed!

The stuff we’ve learned, though, is fantastic and invaluable.
