Kaua’i Vacation

We’re just back from the beautiful island of Kaua’i and we’re still wringing the rain out of our clothes! Turns out December ain’t a good time to visit the islands.

Our friends Carlton, Erin, Jay and Steve were with us, and we all had a marvelous time, proving that the company you keep is at least as important as the destination. We got some sun, had some great food, and took advantage of dry spells to explore the island.

Funny story: none of us had been to a luau, and we were assured by the concierge that “the best luau on the island” was held at the next hotel down the beach. (I won’t reveal the name of the hotel, but it rhymes with Hyatt). Against our better judgment we decided to give it a go. We should have bailed out when we heard out that the luau would be moved into the hotel ballroom, instead of the beach, because of the heavy rain. But as my Mom says, you pays your money and you takes your chances.

Regrettably there was the smarmy emcee crooning "Tiny Bubbles". So-so buffet food. A herd of bewildered newlywed husbands onstage in grass skirts attempting the hula. And the emcee instructing us to shout "ah-loooooh-HA" at him. Fortunately we quickly made friends with one of the banquet waitresses, who kindly kept supplying us with Mai Tais. But there was still lots of groaning and eye-rolling going on from our end of the table. And even with some spectacular fire dancing and hula-ing, this luau just couldn’t redeem itself. We had a good laugh about it later.

The first photo is an Anthurium flower in the courtyard of the Sheraton hotel. This one is an elusive little Day Gecko. I only saw one gecko on this trip and it took off as soon as I got close, so this is a photo from a previous trip we took to Hawai’i.

Aloha!
