The Yucatan Experience-Day 5

Reef Resort Yucatan, Progreso, Chelem

After some rigorous last-minute posing sessions, the workshop finished at noon and we bid our farewells.

Michele took us to look at various properties for sale in Progreso and Chelem, all beachfront. The area is being slowly built up with vacation homes, small condos and a small hotel or two. We stopped at one of the hotels, a six-room hacienda-type suite hotel owned by some expatriates from Houston. Michele wants to start a Photography School. There’s a large industrial kitchen on the premises. John could hold cooking classes! There’s a housekeeping and maintenance staff on the payroll, too.

We could live there half the year and then switch around to the other co-owners, who would take over the responsibilities of running the place. A changing of the gringo guard. Only problem is the weather. Being right on the beach (Right. On. The. Beach.) puts the place at risk from hurricanes. Isidore in 2003 really hammered the area and a lot of places were ripped apart. Some places were rebuilt, and some weren’t. We could buy some Hurricane Insurance and rename the place The Hacienda Hotel. We’d probably have to come up with $50,000 each.

BAM! That was the sound of us coming back to reality. How can we afford sushi if we invest in property in Mexico?
