The Yucatan Experience-Day 3

Reef Resort Yucatan, Izamal

The six students, plus Monte, Michele and three beautiful chicas set off for the town of Izamal in central Yucatan. It took about an hour to get there from the resort. The further you get from civilization, the bigger the potholes. I’m tyring to type this as accurtately as poss bile bueut its not easy. But whos conplaining? We’re driving around in Michele’s a-little-beyond-its-prime Ford van. It rides and sounds like you’d expect a twenty-year-old van to ride and sound. It took her six days to drive it down from Wisconsin. On a wing and a prayer, so to speak. And some duct tape.

Izamal has a busy town square and is famous because Pope John Paul II visited in 1983. To commemorate, the town painted all of their buildings yellow before he arrived. I asked if the color yellow had any significance. (No.) Izamal is a very amarillo-colored town.

A word about the models we photographed today: the word is “tutus”.
Two of the three models we photographed are ballerinas, so Michele and Monte had them bring their leotards, tutus, toe shoes etc. I didn’t like the idea because it wasn’t authentic Mexico, and firmly informed John I wouldn’t be taking pictures of any girls in tutus. But the girls looked fabulous and added exactly the right amount of grace and beauty to the locations. It may not be authentic Mexico, but it looked good, so I snuck in a few shots. So graceful.
