The Yucatan Experience-Day 1

Monte and Michele are wise and supportive mentors. They’ve worked together for nearly thirty years. “Look for the light” is Monte’s mantra. And although Michele is a Master Photographer in her own right, her mantra is “listen to Monte”. Monte views the world as a photograph just waiting to be taken, and often brings conversations to a halt, saying “look at the light on his/her face. Beautiful. Where’s my camera? I’ve got to get a picture before the light changes”.

Most of the resort guests are Canadians. Evidently this has been a tourist destination for Canadians for years, and we Americans are coming a bit late to the party. The Canadian groups arrive and depart on Wednesdays every week, most arriving nonstop from Toronto. The flights bring in pasty-white tourists and take them home sunburned a week later.

Since we’re on the northern coast of Yucatan, internet is practically out of the question. So we’re worried that we’re missing wedding inquiries and good stuff on eBay. The only internet that’s available is a dial-up in the manager’s office.

Our models today were Sonya and Juan Carlos. Sonya loved my photo of her because she said it looked like Jennifer Lopez.
